Botanic Garden (BOGA)

Opening hours, free entry, and a perfect quiet escape in Bern

Bern's Botanic Garden (BOGA), run by the University of Bern, is a quiet "reset" that feels like a hidden gift: glasshouses, themed plant beds, an alpine rockery and calm paths that make the city drop away within minutes. It tumbles down toward the Aare in the Lorraine quarter, so a visit comes with river views as well as plants—and best of all, entry is completely free. It's especially perfect in winter and the shoulder seasons, when a warm greenhouse walk is the best possible break between Old Town sights.

Hours shift with the season, and the garden occasionally closes parts for maintenance—so it's worth confirming the current schedule close to your visit.

Opening hours & free entry

The garden is open daily and admission is free—a genuine rarity for a city attraction of this quality. The hours split into two parts, the open-air garden and the heated greenhouses, and the outdoor section lengthens in summer:

  • Outdoor garden (Freiland), May–September: daily 08:00–19:30 (often until 21:00 during Bern's summer holidays)
  • Outdoor garden (Freiland), October–April: daily 08:00–17:00
  • Greenhouses (Schauhäuser): daily 08:00–17:00, year-round

In winter, paths in parts of the garden can have limited maintenance, so good shoes help—but the greenhouses stay warm and green regardless. As always with seasonal hours, a glance at the official page never hurts before you go.

What to see

The collection is laid out as a walk through habitats: a tropical and subtropical greenhouse, a desert house, an alpine rock garden of mountain plants, and themed outdoor beds that change with the seasons. With the Aare sliding past below and the Lorraine bridge overhead, it doubles as a riverside viewpoint. Set aside anywhere from 45 minutes for a quick loop to a relaxed half-day if you want to sit and read.

How to get there (easy mode)

  • On foot: it's an easy walk from the main station / Old Town through the Lorraine quarter, down toward the river.
  • Public transport: a short bus hop from the centre drops you a few minutes' walk away.
  • Best approach: treat it as a quiet add-on to an Old Town itinerary—a green pause rather than a destination in itself.

Overnight guests can use the Bern Ticket for free travel within zones 100/101, which covers the ride out here. It also pairs naturally with the nearby Lorraine neighbourhood guide.
